Walk of the month September: An inland circuit – stepping back in time

Son Fortesa

This is the ultimate get-away-from-it-all walk where peace is absolute! We get a glimpse of rural life on the island in years gone by, sometimes a little tumbledown and sometimes not in operation anymore, but with the help of a little imagination, this lovely inland walk gives us a very good idea of how things must have been!

Starting from the beautiful manor house estate of Son Fortesa on the edge of the village of Puigpunyent, we climb steadily along charcoal burnersĀ“ tracks and trails before reaching terraces of gnarled olive trees, a spring, wild goats and an abandoned farmhouse.

Our walk then takes us into dense holm oak forest of dappled light and shade. We pass a lime kiln before rejoining a cobbled trail descending across terraces with far reaching mountain views and manor houses – and lots of examples of some of Mallorca’s fine dry walling.

A 2km walk along a back road brings us back to Puigpunyent where we have a couple of bars to choose from to finish off with a cool drink…

Lots of examples of Mallorca’s old manor houses and estates….
