Jeanneau Announces New Monocat Boat Concept

French yard commissions Philippe Briand to design new ‘Sun Loft’ project

Jeanneau’s spring press conference, held during an international boat test event for boating media in Cannes, was the setting for a scoop for the attending journalists. Antoine Chancelier, marketing director for the sailing boat division of the French shipyard, announced an innovative boat concept to representatives of the press against the dramatic backdrop of a violent spring storm.

The ‘Sun Loft’ project is a so-called monocat. A monocat is usually understood to be a variant of a multihull boat. It starts in the bow area as a monohull construction, while its rear end is designed like a catamaran with two hulls. This type of boat is narrower than other multihulls and can combine the advantages of mono- and multihulls.

Strategic order for Philippe Briand

Sailing cats as well as purely motor-driven boats can be realised in the monocat design. Jeanneau has commissioned Philippe Briand with the strategic project Sun Loft. The yacht designer has designed numerous boats for the French shipyard since 1977. The 45 models created by his design company include the first Sun Fast models, most Sun Odyssey family sailboats since 2012 and large blue-water sailing yachts up to the current Jeanneau 64.

No details before 25 April

Jeanneau did not publish any details regarding the new boat concept yet. Insiders assumed after the press conference that the new project could have been inspired by the Dufour Atoll 43. Introduced in 1998 and not very successful with only 40 units sold, this monohull sailboat had an extremely wide pilothouse offering lots of space – and it was also designed by Philippe Briand.

The Sun Loft concept will be presented for the first time in detail to the public during the International Multihull Boat Show at La Grande-Motte. Jean-Paul Chapeleau, general manager Jeanneau-Prestige, will introduce the boat together with developer Philippe Briand on 25 April.
