America’s Cup: The Tribe Has Spoken

After it was revealed the 36th America’s Cup would be held in a new monohull class of boat, stopping the run of multihull matches at three (2010, 2013, 2017), we wondered about the popularity of this decision.

We remembered how the opposition to multihulls was strong at the beginning, but change can be hard, and there was a lot of change then to deal with. Maybe opinion had swung, so Scuttlebutt hosted a survey to see where people stood, and we learned that 82% wanted monohulls.

So much for time swaying sentiment.

Along with submitting their vote, many offered comments which covered a lot of territory. In general, the multihull camp endorsed progress and performance while the monohull advocates preferred tactics and crew work.
